1862 Young widow Eugénie faces an uncertain future in Guernsey when her husband dies at sea. A
further tragedy brings her to the attention of Monsieur Victor Hugo, exiled on the island and living in
his voluptuous house only yards away from Eugénie. Their meeting changes her life
and she begins working for him as a copyist, forming a strong friendship with both Hugo and his mistress, Juliette Drouet.

2012 Doctor Tess Le Prevost, born in Guernsey, now living in Exeter, is shocked to inherit her Great
Aunt’s house on the island. Asa child she listened to Aunt Doris’s tales of their ancestor, Eugénie, whose house this once was, and who, according to family myth, was particularly close to Hugo. Was he the father of her child? Tess doubts it, but inheriting the house allows her to make a fresh start in her beloved island.

Will she discover the truth about Eugénie and Hugo? A surprise find may hold the answer as Tess embraces new challenges which test her strength and her heart.

My thoughts..

The Inheritance is now the seventh book in the series and like the previous novels it is set on the beautiful island of Guernsey, a place the author knows well, and who continues to bring to life this beautiful island in a really lovely way.

The story opens in Guernsey in March 1862 with an entry in the diary of Eugénie who, as a young widow of nineteen, must learn to make her own way in life. Providence shines on her when she is rescued from disaster by a middle aged woman and a gentleman who she discovers is Monsieur Victor Hugo.

In March 2012 we meet Tess, who is a young doctor struggling with the demands of working long hours in the A&E department of a busy hospital, and so when she discovers that she has inherited her great aunt's house on the island of Guernsey a whole new life shines before her.

When then follows is a beautifully written dual time story, and whilst it has one foot firmly in the past, it also represents the more modern challenges that Tess faces when she discovers more about her inheritance and the history attached to it.

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading The Inheritance as both time elements sit very comfortably together. Eugenie's story reveals so much about the history of the time along with some fascinating detail about Victor Hugo, I especially loved the literary references which were scattered like gems throughout Eugénie's story. However, I was equally comfortable with Tess's story and enjoyed watching how her life changed as she came under the spell of the house, the island and the people who live there.

As always, the author brings the island of Guernsey to life in such a delightful way that with each successive novel, I feel as if I am returning to a place I know well. I always really look forward to my visits there, safe in the knowledge that I will be treated to a wonderful story, with a delicious setting and with characters who fly straight to my heart.
