πŸ“– Blog Tour ~ An Italian Island Summer by Sue Moorcroft

Avon
25 May 2023

My thanks to the publisher
and to Rachel's Random Resources for the invitation to the blog tour

After her marriage falls apart, Ursula Quinn is offered the chance to spend the summer working at a hotel on a beautiful island off the coast of Sicily, Italy. Excited by a new adventure, she sets off at once. At Residenza dei Tringali, Ursula receives a warm welcome from everyone except Alfio, son of the Tringali family. He gave up his life in Barcelona to help his mother Agata with the ailing business, and is frustrated with Ursula’s interference–and she in turn is less than impressed with his attitude. As they spend more time together, though, they begin to see each other in a different light. But what with Ursula’s ex-husband on her tail, family secrets surfacing and an unexpected offer that makes Alfio question his whole life, there’s plenty to distract them from one another. Can she face her past and he his future, and together make the most of their Sicilian summer.

πŸ“– My Review..

After a disastrous marriage break-up Ursula Quinn escapes to the beautiful Italian island of Ortigia in Sicily to take up the offer of boarding at Residenza dei Tringali in return for helping with general hotel duties. This leaves Ursula time to explore her gift for creating ceramics and experiencing tutelage with a talented ceramist. All seems to be going well until Alfio, the son of the hotelier arrives home, and he and Ursula don't get off to the best of starts but gradually the atmosphere between them softens and Ursula soon finds her life heading in an unexpected direction.

I loved the rapport between Ursula and Alfio which helps to bring a real feeling of Italian sunshine to what is, in effect, a lovely, love story. Alongside the romantic element of the story there's also lots of complicated family dynamics to contend with but that's what this author does so well, her characters are always believable with real life issues which sometimes get in the way of life and love. The wonderfully quaint island of Ortigia comes alive in the beautiful descriptions of life on the island. The sights, sounds and aromas of an Italian summer are imaginatively recreated so that it really does feel like you are sitting alongside Ursula and Alfio as they sip ice cool Birra Moretti, relishing the cool of a Sicilian evening.

Beautifully written as all these author's stories are  An Italian Island Summer is a perfect summer read, ideal for long, lazy afternoons in the garden.

πŸ“– Blog Tour ~ The Last Girl to Die by Helen Fields

Avon
1 September 2022

My thanks to the publishers for my copy of this book
and also to Midas pr for the invitation to the blog tour

In search of a new life, sixteen-year-old Adriana Clark’s American family moves to the ancient, ocean-battered Isle of Mull, far off the coast of Scotland. Then she goes missing. Faced with hostile locals and indifferent police, her desperate parents turn to private investigator Sadie Levesque.

Sadie is the best at what she does. But when she finds Adriana’s body in a cliff side cave, a seaweed crown carefully arranged on her head, she knows she’s dealing with something she’s never encountered before.

The deeper she digs into the island’s secrets, the closer danger creeps – and the more urgent her quest to find the killer grows. Because what if Adriana is not the last girl to die?

I am delighted to be able to share an extract from The Last Girl To Die (p.62-64)

An emerald mist was blowing off the sea at 5 a.m. It infiltrated the gaps in my ancient window and brought the scents of seaweed and salt. The curtains were damp as I pulled them back, and there was no chance I would fall back to sleep. Knowing that no one else in my corridor wanted to be woken at that time, I left my room and the hotel quietly, made for the hills behind the town and headed south. The drop away from the land to the sea was timeless. Beyond the town, the remoteness hit me. I saw only a handful of houses as I walked. Trees that had stood for generations lined my path and the heather underfoot added a scratchy cushioned layer to the earth. Seagulls eyed me suspiciously from the air, but it was the fishing boats and lobster pots they wanted. The island was a place removed from the world, and although Tobermory was a slice of civilisation, it hadn’t made a dent in the wildness of the scenery. The sea breathed in and out with me as I walked. Finally, back at The Last Bay Hotel, I showered, dressed, put on my best attitude and went to explore what the Mull Historical Emporium had to offer.

The once dark-green sign was weather faded to something less bold and more mossy, which was how the inside felt too. The dust was what I noticed first. Overhead lighting filtered into glass cabinets that should have sparkled, lighting up the debris of ages. Guidebooks and maps alongside history books with transparent plastic covers gave the Emporium the air of a dying library. Bric-a-brac sporting various clan motifs with fading price tags lined the walls and lay unloved on shelves. Portraits, landscapes, a few animal heads that made me queasy. A lock of hair in a pearl inlay box. Many of the displays offered minute handwritten information cards next to them. A ship’s manifest in a language I couldn’t make out. Half the items for sale, the remainder there to encourage tourists through the doors. Not quite a museum; not quite a shop. There were several areas to wander through, each tiny and featuring a different period in Mull’s history. Low oak beams, exposed inner walls and three small but beautiful open fireplaces. ‘Can I h-help?’ The stutter on the ‘h’ told me immediately who was standing behind me. He was close enough that I could feel the heat of his body against my back.

I turned my head to reply, but kept my body facing the fireplace I was admiring. ‘Hi,’ I said. ‘I was looking for a guidebook about the island.’ ‘I know who you are,’ he said. The sentence took time to get through, each word a trial. I waited for him to finish. Damp with sweat, his clothes needed more care, as did his hair and nails. ‘I love this building. How old is it?’ ‘1820,’ he said. I could smell sour fruit acid on his breath and his fingers flexed and twitched as he spoke to me. ‘What’s your name?’ ‘Sadie,’ I replied. ‘Sadie,’ he repeated back to me slowly.

‘They call you Skittles, right?’ He gave a broad grin revealing teeth that confirmed what Rachel had told me about his diet. ‘Did you ever talk to Adriana? Did she ever come in here?’ His smile melted. ‘She’s d-d-dead,’ he said, the stutter worsening as his face reddened. I watched, recognising his limited abilities as we talked. At some point a diagnosis would surely have been made, but I was no psychologist. It seemed to me that Skittles was functioning only at a basic level. He could answer direct questions, repeat facts, ring purchases up on a till, but beyond that I had doubts. ‘Do you know Mackinnon’s Cave where she was found?’ I asked. ‘It’s d-dark there at night,’ was his reply. ‘Don’t l-like it.’ ‘Really?’ I said. ‘I thought I saw you going out late last night. You got in your car and drove somewhere.’ His eyes slid from my gaze. ‘Get you a g-guidebook,’ he muttered, walking off. I followed, disliking the fact that I was leaping to conclusions, but the seeds were planted in my mind and already sprouting. ‘Do you live here too or just work here?’ I asked as he reached up to a shelf behind the counter and took down a book. ‘Live,’ he said. ‘Nine ninety-nine.’ I handed over a ten-pound note and watched as his fingers took their time punching each button on the old-fashioned till. I picked up my purchase and left to check out Adriana’s regular haunts and retrace the steps of her final day.

πŸ“– My Review..

Sadie Levesque is a Canadian private investigator who has been employed by an American family living on the Isle of Mull who are desperate to find their missing teenage daughter. The disappearance of sixteen year-old Adriana Clark has left the small Scottish town of Tobermory bewildered but when Sadie discovers a body in an isolated cave, it would seem that the townsfolk start to close ranks and with a less than helpful local police force, Sadie soon finds that she is battling against prejudice, local indifference and long buried superstition.

Sadie Levesque is an interesting protagonist, she's not afraid to challenge the local police team, ruffling feathers and upsetting male egos in her quest to uncover the dark and deadly secrets of Tobermory and the reasons why young girls in the town are being targeted in such a terrifying way. As always this talented author get right into the heart of the action, weaving complex strands of the story with precision and with interesting dialogue from the island itself which gives an extra insight into its dark and mysterious past. The story moves along quickly as there is much to discover and many twists, turns and red herrings before the final sad denouement, which doesn't disappoint.

Mysterious, addictive and compulsive reading, The Last Girl to Die is an atmospheric standalone thriller which uses local myth, pagan legends and eerie superstition to bring this thrilling story to life.

πŸ“– Publication Day Book Review ~ The Arctic Curry Club by Dani Redd

Happy Publication Day

Avon
9 December 2021

My thanks to the publishers for my copy of this book

‘For my whole life I had been looking for home. But why would that be in a place that I’d left? Perhaps I had to keep moving forward in order to find it…’

Soon after upending her life to accompany her boyfriend Ryan to the Arctic, Maya realises it’s not all Northern Lights and husky sleigh rides. Instead, she’s facing sub-zero temperatures, 24-hour darkness, crippling anxiety – and a distant boyfriend as a result.

In her loneliest moment, Maya opens her late mother’s recipe book and cooks Indian food for the first time. Through this, her confidence unexpectedly grows – she makes friends, secures a job as a chef, and life in the Arctic no longer freezes her with fear.

But there’s a cost: the aromatic cuisine rekindles memories of her enigmatic mother and her childhood in Bangalore. Can Maya face the past and forge a future for herself in this new town? After all, there’s now high demand for a Curry Club in the Arctic, and just one person with the know-how to run it…

A tender and uplifting story about family, community, and finding where you truly belong – guaranteed to warm your heart despite the icy setting!

πŸ“– My thoughts..

Set against the icy chill of the Arctic a story about a curry club wouldn't perhaps the first thing that comes to mind but when Maya travels to the Arctic to be with her boyfriend she discovers that her mother's curry recipes can be put to good use. But with the mingling of spices comes an awareness of other things in Maya's life which need to be confronted before she can move forward.

The story was perhaps rather more serious than I expected which was a welcome surprise as there was far more to Maya than I first anticipated especially as it covers her feelings and anxieties, particularly about her past and her Indian heritage. Her sojourn back in Bangalore helps her to explore these feelings in more detail. The icy cold aspect of living in the Arctic is well described and I could feel the cold and experienced the icy terror of dangers which can only be imagined.

The Arctic Curry Club is a well written and thoughtful story about friendship, community and finding a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Blog Tour ~ The Missing Wife by Sam Carrington

I'm delighted to host today's blog tour stop for this psychological suspense novel

Imagine turning up to your own party, and recognising no one. Your best friend has just created your worst nightmare.

Louisa is an exhausted, sleep-deprived new mother and, approaching her fortieth birthday, the very last thing she wants to do is celebrate.

But when her best friend Tiff organises a surprise party, inviting the entire list of Lou’s Facebook friends, she’s faced with a new source of anxiety altogether: a room full of old college classmates who she hasn’t spoken to in twenty years.

And one person in particular she never expected to see again is there – her ex-boyfriend from college, the handsome and charismatic Oliver Dunmore. When Oliver’s wife Melissa goes missing after the party, everyone remembers what happened that night differently. It could be the alcohol, but it seems more than one person has something to hide.

Louisa is determined to find the truth about what happened to Melissa. But just how far does she need to look…?

Here's what I thought about it..

Not everyone loves a surprise party, and for Louisa, celebrating her 40th birthday is not a priority as she's also a sleep deprived new mum. Struggling to adjust to motherhood despite having a teenage daughter, Louisa just wants to sleep rather than party, but her husband and best friend think a party will help to boost her mood. However, the party brings Louisa into contact with lots of her Facebook friends she doesn't really know and also brings an unexpected reunion with her ex-boyfriend Oliver which opens up a hole heap of secrets that Louisa would rather have kept buried.

I enjoyed the rather slow build up of the story so that we get to know more about Louisa, and also about her best friend, Tiff, who seems to be supportive one minute, and then secretive the next. Louisa is something of an enigma and her bouts of anxiety and episodes of amnesia add an interesting aspect to the story. However, I think that this is one of those complex suspense stories where in places you have to suspend belief, especially towards the end of the novel which I felt opened up more questions than answers, and as there is more than one unreliable narrator you are never quite sure if the truth is being told by any of them πŸ˜‰

The Missing Wife is an interesting psychological suspense story, and the author adds enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Even though there were times when I had to stop and consider would someone really do that, overall, the story kept entertained from start to finish.

I disappeared on a Tuesday afternoon. I was there one minute and the next I was gone. They’ve never found my body…

It’s six in the morning during the hottest summer on record when Elizabeth O’Loughlin, out walking her dog, comes across Clare, a victim of a horrific knife attack, clinging onto life at the side of the road.

Clare dies minutes later, but not before whispering her haunting last words to Elizabeth.

When it becomes clear that Clare’s killer has more than one murder on his mind, Elizabeth has to take drastic action or face losing everything. But what if she can’t stop a killer determined never to be forgotten?

My thoughts..

Elizabeth O'Loughlin is walking her dog when she comes across the body of a young woman. Horrifically and fatally injured, the woman, Clare, whispers something to Elizabeth, which starts off a whole chain of complicated events.

Forget Me Not looks at the complex secrets which revolve around three women who have known each other for years. Clare makes up one of the threesome, and her untimely death threatens not just her own family but that of her friends. So many secrets start to be uncovered and whilst the threat of danger never goes away, the two remaining friends cling to each other, coping in the best way they can.

The psychological tension is cranked up to high, and the twists and turns in the story keep you guessing. The author certainly knows how to keep your attention and the opening chapter is particularly dramatic, there are some genuinely dark moments, and some really scary events which I didn't expect, and which made the story all the more compelling.

Forget Me Not is a forceful psychological suspense story moving along at an absolutely cracking pace which keeps the energy alive from start to finish.

TICK…

In the city of Stoke, a teenage girl is murdered in the middle of the day, her lifeless body abandoned in a field behind her school.

TOCK…

Two days later, a young mother is abducted. She’s discovered strangled and dumped in a local park.

TIME’S UP…

DS Grace Allendale and her team are brought in to investigate, but with a bold killer, no leads and nothing to connect the victims, the case seems hopeless. It’s only when a third woman is targeted that a sinister pattern emerges. A dangerous mind is behind these attacks, and Grace realises that the clock is ticking…

Can they catch the killer before another young woman dies?

The #1 bestseller returns with a breath-taking thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. Perfect for fans of Martina Cole and Kimberley Chambers.

My thoughts..

DS Grace Allendale's return to work in her home town of Stoke-on-Trent got off to a cracking start in Hush Hush which was the first book in this new crime series. In Tick Tock, DS Allendale once  again finds that she and her team of detectives have to keep one step ahead of a serial killer who is intent on targeting people who, seemingly, have no connection with each other.

The story gets off to a dramatic start and because of the emotional nature of the first case, which involves a teenage girl, Grace and her team are under huge pressure to close the investigation as quickly as possible. However, the creepy edginess and the realisation that the clock is ticking, and the many twists and turns in the plot, make this an incredibly difficult case to solve.

This is turning out to be such a great series, and with Grace Allendale's local connections adding interesting complications, there is never a moment when the tension isn't cranked up to a high level. The police procedural part of the story always feels totally authentic and I really enjoy watching how the investigative team set about cracking the, almost, impossible clues. The character detail is, as always, excellent, and there are some interesting observations into the mindset of the perpetrator which I won't spoil by giving anything away.

This crime series has such potential to run and run and I can't wait to see how Grace's character develops in future stories. If you haven't read the first book in the series then I would urge you to do so, but both books also work as standalone stories.

D.S Imogen Grey #4

What's it all about...

When troubled teen Connor moves to Exeter from the US to escape his past, he finds himself embroiled in a world of popular kids and easy girls. Everyone wants to be his friend, but they don’t know about what he did…and they don’t know about his father.

As Connor’s life in England begins to unravel, DS Adrian Miles and his partner Imogen Grey are working up against the clock to catch a serial killer who dates his victims before he kills them. Determined to uncover the truth, Imogen is forced to act as bait – but will she take it too far and risk her own life?

Katerina Diamond is back with a bang in this dark, twisted novel, perfect for fans of M.J. Arlidge and Karin Slaughter.

My thoughts about it...

It's always interesting to read a series and to see the main characters grow in confidence and even if you haven't read the previous books there are enough hints into the background of the partnership between DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles so that you can pick up hints as to what's gone on for them in the past.

This fourth book in the series gets off to a good start with an opening chapter which really sets the scene for what's to come. That a serial killer, with an unusual modus operandi, is targeting young women in Exeter forms the crux of the story and DS Grey is thrust into the very heart of the investigation bringing the danger, for her, ever closer to home.

There are three main threads to this story which are all woven together with an interesting eye for detail. At first there seems little correlation between a ruthless killer, a teenager who has recently moved to England, and the diary entries of an unknown woman, however, the tantalising clues which are dropped like gems along the way soon start to make sense, making the connection between them all the more compulsive.

This author seems to go from strength to strength and writes about the grittier side of life with an edginess which is a little shocking at times but which most certainly grabs your attention. The relationship between DS Grey and DS Miles is such a sustainable partnership that I can see this series continuing for some time to come.

Katerina Diamond was born in Weston in the seventies. She moved to Thessaloniki in Greece and attended Greek school where she learnt Greek in just 6 months. After her parents’ divorce, they relocated to Devon. After school, and working in her uncle’s fish and chip shop, she went (briefly) to university at Derby, where she met her husband and had two children. Katerina now lives in the East Kent Coast with her husband and children.

Blog Tour ~ Her Name Was Rose by Claire Allan

Jaffareadstoo is delighted to be hosting today's stop on Her Name Was Rose Blog Tour

This new Irish voice is bursting onto the scene with her first foray into the thriller genre. This promises to be one of the most exciting debuts of 2018. Perfect for fans of Lianne Moriarty, B. A. Paris, Gillian Flynn and Marian Keyes.

My thanks to the publishers for my copy of this book and the invitation to be part of the blog tour

Her name was Rose.
You watched her die.
And her death has created a vacancy.

When Emily lets a stranger step out in front of her, she never imagines that split second will change her life. But after Emily watches a car plough into the young mother – killing her instantly – she finds herself unable to move on.

And then she makes a decision she can never take back.

Because Rose had everything Emily had ever dreamed of. A beautiful, loving family, a great job and a stunning home. And now Rose’s husband misses his wife, and their son needs a mother. Why couldn’t Emily fill that space?

But as Emily is about to discover, no one’s life is perfect … and not everything is as it seems.

And here's what I thought about it..

This clever psychological thriller grips from the dramatic opening which introduces us to Emily D'Arcy, who after witnessing a fatal accident is left reeling with disbelief. When she discovers more about, Rose Grahame, the victim of the accident, Emily soon becomes totally immersed in Rose's life, to the point where she is completely obsessed with needing to find out more and more about her.

What then follows is a skilfully crafted psychological suspense story which has more than enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The story gets off to a bit of a slow start but as Emily gets more and more involved in the seemingly perfection of, what was once, Rose's life, so the mystery at the heart of the novel starts to pull ever tighter.

I really enjoyed the hidden depths of this story, the characters, in particular, come bouncing into life, especially, Cian, Rose's widowed husband, who is a forceful presence from the start. However, it is the other characters, who Emily finds herself involved with, who add an interesting dimension to the overall complexity of the story.

I can't say too much about the plot and its eventual outcome as that would spoil it and this story is one you need to read without any spoilers from me but what I will say is that Her Name was Rose is an enjoyable escape into a complex world of secrets and lies and is a great holiday-by-the pool sort of read.

Blurb:

THE TRUTH WON’T STAY LOCKED UP FOREVER

When a burned body is found in a disused signal box, suspicion falls on lonely teenager Gabriel Webb. There’s no doubt he was at the scene of the crime, but does he deserve what awaits him in prison?

DS Imogen Grey is certain there’s more to the case than meets the eye. But while she struggles to convince those around her of the truth, her partner DS Adrian Miles is distracted by his own demons.

When a brutal double murder is reported, their investigation is stopped in its tracks. Is the body in the box even who they thought it was? The duo realise Gabriel might have been locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. But with enemies watching Gabriel’s every move, they may be too late.

Miles and Grey are back in the thrilling new novel from bestselling author Katerina Diamond, perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter and M.J. Arlidge, Orange Is The New Black and Locked Up.

Extract Six from Chapter One, pp 20-21

Trey dropped a few rocks of crack into the pipe and sucked in a couple of deep breaths as though he were about to dive into the sea before putting his lips to the edge of the pipe. He held the lighter under the glass bowl and gently rolled the glass stem in his fingers as he slowly drew the milky smoke into his lungs. His expression changed and he sat back in his chair. Chris took the pipe from him. Gabriel noticed that Leanne was watching Emma the whole time, obviously trying to gauge her reaction to this, to see if she was open to it. He saw her shiver again.

‘We should go. It’s freezing in here,’ Gabriel said, stepping closer to his girlfriend. The sun was going down and he didn’t fancy crossing the tracks in the dark, plus he really didn’t want to be here with these people any longer.

‘Killjoy.’ Leanne grinned, her face like a viper.

‘It’s OK. We’ll go in a bit.’ Emma smiled at Gabriel. He noticed how people were different with each other; Emma behaved differently when they were alone, she behaved differently with her family too and she was definitely behaving differently here with Leanne. This behaviour didn’t feel like her, it was a side he hadn’t seen before. A tapping sound echoed against the window as the rain began.

‘It’s starting to chuck it down,’ Gabriel said, looking at Emma hopefully, trying to impart to her his strong desire to leave. She just shifted her gaze away.

‘Why don’t you see if you can warm it up in here?’ Leanne asked him, it was a challenge, a threat maybe; there was something about her that made Gabriel really uneasy and it seemed amplified in here.

Gabriel went to the corner and grabbed the metal waste paper bin that had been left in the signal box. He didn’t want to cause a fuss; maybe his argument with his father earlier had made him extra defensive, maybe he wasn’t thinking straight. He collected some of the rubbish from the floor and piled it in before picking up one of Trey’s lighters from the table and snapping the head off.

Blog Tour ~ The Alibi by Jaime Raven

Jaffareadstoo is delighted to be hosting

Day One of The Alibi Blog Tour

with a guest post from the author

My worst New Year hangover

Guest post by Jaime Raven, author of The Alibi

‘You need a convincing alibi, Jaime,’ my friend Megan said to me. ‘Otherwise you’re going to be in the doghouse for months.’

It was New Year ’s Day a few years ago and I’d woken up on the floor of her bedroom. I had the mother of all hangovers, and my head was pounding like a drum.

I knew I was going to be in trouble because I wasn’t where I should have been – which was at home in my own bed. Instead I was two miles away in my friend’s flat trying to remember why I’d ended up there. It took a while for the memories to filter through the fog in my brain.

My partner and I were staging a New Year’s Eve party at our house in Southampton. My own daughters were going to be there along with some of our pals. Everyone knew I’d be late because I was travelling back from London.

And everything was going swimmingly until I met my old mate Megan on the train. She told me how miserable she was because she’d just got divorced and this was her first New Year’s Eve by herself.

I invited her to the party but she said she was too sad to mix with other people. But she wanted me to have a drink with her.

Well one drink led to another and then another. We ended up visiting three pubs and I got so smashed that I didn’t make it to the party.

Anyway, to cut a long story short I decided to lie through my teeth and tell my partner that I met Megan on the train and she was so distressed that I didn’t want to leave her alone. So I went to her flat and we shared a bottle of wine and lost track of time. Before I knew it we both fell asleep.

But the hole I had already dug for myself got a lot deeper as soon as I called home and belted out my fake alibi.

What I should have done was check the phone first because then I would have seen the photos I’d sent to my partner throughout the previous evening. There were a couple of ghastly selfies, Megan and I welcoming in the New Year with paper hats on our heads, and Megan being sick in the gutter.

Not to mention the text messages I’d fired off in my drunken state: ‘I love you honey,’ ‘It’s too late to come home,’ ‘Tell everyone I’m sorry,’ ‘Please forgive me,’ ‘Promise I’ll make it up to you,’ ‘Happy nude year!’

Needless to say I had no recollection of sending any of them or of ignoring phone calls from my partner, my daughters and my friends.

Oops!

Thankfully my partner saw the funny side of it and we went on to get married two years later. But ever since then I’ve been on my best behaviour on New Year’s Eve and I always avoid drinking too much.

Review ~ The Madam by Jaime Raven

29978050
AvonMay 2016

A bit of book blurb..

Scars might fade but the memories don't…

Three years and eleven months. That's how long Lizzie Wells was banged up inside Holloway prison for, serving time for a crime she didn’t commit.

Six months. That's how long it took Lizzie to fall in love with a woman inside the prison. Scar, who might just have reason for her name.

Now Lizzie is finally free, the duo embark on a search to find those who framed Lizzie and sent her down for cold blooded murder.

My thoughts ..

On her release from prison, Lizzie Wells hits the ground running as she is determined to discover just who framed her for a murder she didn't commit, and more importantly why the perpetrators have been allowed to cover their tracks so convincingly. Armed with nothing more than the occasional knife, and their determination, Lizzie and her feisty companion Scar, delve into the murky world of the Southampton's criminal elite. It's a dark and dangerous world of deals and subterfuge, places where murder, loyalty and vengeance go hand in hand, and where getting on the wrong side of someone can lead to untold disaster.

I found The Madam all quite believable and even though there were times when I wanted Lizzie to slow down and think a little more carefully, I think part of the excitement, for me, came from never knowing what she was going to do next. Scar is the perfect calm counterfoil to Lizzie's impetuousness and together they make a great couple.

The plot develops really quickly and it’s very easy to go along with the story as it unfolds. Both Lizzie and Scar are exciting characters; they each have their own faults and failings but each have an undeniable strength and courage when it comes to facing down their enemies. The plot is fast and furious with never a dull moment and there's a gritty, realistic edge which is so essential to a dark and dirty crime story. There is swearing and graphic violence, so if this type of story upsets you, then it's not going to appeal.  I think this author’s works sits comfortably alongside the likes of Julie Shaw, Kimberley Chambers and Martina Cole, so if you’re a fan of gritty crime, then this will, probably, appeal to you.

Overall, the author has written a believable story and has given the characters great personalities. I even liked some of the bad guys. The twist in the tale is plausible and in a way, I think that the ending lends itself to a continuation, and maybe even a series, as I can well imagine Lizzie and Scar getting inadvertently drawn into more dark and gritty investigations.

Best read with...A glass of champagne and... a packet of cheese and onion crisps...

My thanks to the author for sharing The Madam with me.

My Review of The Curvy Girls Club

Enjoying life rather than counting calories forms the basis of this story which looks at the way society views body image but which does so in a way that most of us can relate to. Katie Winterbottom and her friends become disillusioned with attending a weekly slimming club, only to find that the pounds they lost in weight the week before have been mysteriously added back on. Determined to enjoy themselves they form The Curvy Girls Club which becomes, almost overnight, an instant success. What then follows is a heartfelt look at how female friendship evolves and of how all too often, the expectations of society unfortunately define the person we are, rather than the person we want to be.

I enjoy Michele Gorman’s novels. She manages to get right into the heart of the novel and captures with a light and easy style of writing the very essence of female friendship. Her characters literally bounce of the page and very quickly you become immersed in their story, which will have you laughing out loud one minute and fighting tears the next.

The Curvy Girls Club is a warm and witty look at a topic, that of body image, which all too often we shy away from, and yet, this novel shows that size really doesn’t matter,  but good writing does, and this delivers fine writing in abundance.

My thanks to Michele Gorman and Notting Hill Press for sharing this book with me.

Happy Publication Day ~ The Diamond Ring By Primula Bond

Fans of Gustav and Serena who have followed this series from the very beginning will not be disappointed in this third and final piece of the trilogy jigsaw puzzle which opens where book two ended. Gustav and Serena are completely wrapped up, quite literally, in each other and their sensuous appeal really knows no bounds, and yet like a blot on their intimate landscape is Gustav's ex wife, Margot, who is determined to do all that she can to sever the unbreakable connection between these two captivating lovers.

In many ways this final piece of the trilogy has a darker edge to it. There are episodes of anger, deception and betrayal and times when the unbreakable bond between Gustav and Serena is tested to its absolute limit. And yet, running through the story like a silken thread is the undeniable passion that they have for each other and the hope that in the end good will overcome pure evil. As always, the author captures the erotic world of opulent desire and takes the reader on a tumultuous journey, from the allure of Paris, through to the exotic world of the Moroccan souk, and with verve and panache skilfully manoeuvres the plot to its dramatic conclusion.

I'm not an avid reader of erotic fiction, not from any prudish sensibility, but more because I have never found an erotic novel with a story to capture my literary imagination. However, I am delighted to write that with this trilogy, I have been completely won over by the author’s passionate storytelling and have been enthralled in Gustav and Serena’s story from beginning to end.
