๐Ÿ“– Book Review ~ Rescued by Her Highland Soldier by Sarah Mallory

Mills & Boon
Ebook 15 April 2021
Paperback 27 April 2021

Lairds of Ardvarrick #2

My thanks to the author for my copy of this book

Her rugged Highlander

Is the gallant son of a laird!

Travelling alone through the treacherous Scottish Highlands, Madeleine d’Evremont is saved by rough-looking soldier, Grant Rathmore. Attraction flares between them as he escorts Madeline on her perilous escape to France, until she discovers he’s the heir of a respected Laird! Madeline knows she must let him go – surely the daughter of a humble adventurer could never be a suitable match for him now

๐Ÿ“– My thoughts..

Madeleine d’Evremont and Grant Rathmore have their own particular reasons for fleeing Scotland in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. With red coated troops patrolling the area and with the British soldiers' penchant for violence no-one is safe, especially a woman travelling alone. With some trepidation Madeleine hires Rathmore to escort her to a place of safety and whilst their journey is difficult and fraught with danger, it also allows them time to get to know each other in a more meaningful way. This adventurous paring of a feisty young woman and a damaged Highlander is a beautiful combination as each of them bring their own particular secrets into the story.

Whilst the author is more known for her Regency romances, I do find this current foray into Scottish history to be a lovely alternative. Combining complicated history with a lively romance is never easy but this talented author never lets one get in the way of the other. It was equally enjoyable to watch a burgeoning relationship unfold between Madeleine d’Evremont and Grant Rathmore as it was to worry about the difficulties of them travelling in the Scottish highlands when tempers flared easily and the English viewed all Scots as traitors to the crown.

Rescued by Her Highland Soldier combines a strong sense of time and place with a thoroughly enjoyable romantic adventure all of which is written with this author's skilful flair for bringing to the page historical accuracy, and lively passion. Whilst it is the second book in the Laird's of Advarrick series it works completely as a stand-alone story.

Keep your friends close…

But your enemies closer?

In order to find a legendary treasure map, mercenary Louve of Mei Solis must infiltrate his enemy’s fortress under the guise of a servant. There, Louve meets beautiful maiden Biedeluue, a fellow servant with her own hidden agenda…to save her sister from the malevolent Lord’s clutches! Their high-stakes missions may be at odds with one other, but their attraction cannot be denied even in this most dangerous of situations…

What did I think about it...

Serving woman, Biedeluue, is doing all she can to try to rescue her sister, Margery from the clutches of the evil, Ian of Warstone. However, when Bied comes into contact with the enigmatic mercenary, Louve of Mei Solis, who is posing as the castle usher, she is ill prepared for the effect that this man has on her peace of mind. That Louve is not who he says he is adds a certain piquancy to what is, after all, quite a complex medieval adventure.

Filled with an array of rather dastardly villains the story takes some getting used to but once I had the characters firmly in place I found the story moved along at quite a fast pace. I enjoyed getting to know both Bied and Louve, both are complicated characters, and whilst their attraction to each other is obvious, they each have other, more important, things to worry about. However, as with all medieval adventures, nothing is going to run smoothly for this couple in this complicated tale of family politics and whilst I can't say too much for fear of spoiling, I can add that I was intrigued by the complexity of the overall plot.

The author is an accomplished historical fiction writer and brings to the story a distinct air of medieval skulduggery and an interesting sense of time and place. The Maiden and the Mercenary is now the tenth book in the Lovers and Legend series of historical novels which can all be read as standalone stories but as with all series it is better to start at the beginning to see just how the story line progresses through the medieval timeline.

๐ŸŒ  Publication Day Book Review ~ A Marquis in Want of a Wife by Louise Allen

๐ŸŒ  Happy Publication Day ๐ŸŒ

Mills & Boon
26 November 2020

My thanks to the author for my copy of this book

Ross Vincent, Marquis of Cranford, with his scarred face and formidable disposition knows he’s hardly a catch. But he needs a wife to take care of his motherless son. Shy, scholarly Prudence Scott seems ideal: she has no expectation of love or passion. She’ll care for his baby in return for the protection of his name. Yet seeing Prudence on their wedding day tests Ross’s willpower to not take his new wife to bed…

My thoughts..

Prudence Scott has no romantic expectation from her hastily arranged marriage to Ross Vincent, Marquis of Crawford, other than to save her reputation, and to keep her from being the subject of scandalous gossip. It would seem that, likewise, the Marquis simply wants a mother for his motherless son, and love and passion are definitely not on his agenda when he thinks about his new wife.

Whilst this is very much a marriage of convenience there are undercurrents in the relationship between Ross and Prudence which the author describes with lively dialogue and a fine eye for detail. The niceties of Georgian society with all the subtle references to what is right and proper is maintained and the author brings a refreshing sense of honesty to this Regency romance.

There’s a lovely balance between the first stirrings of romance and the awareness of growing passion between this enigmatic couple which works really well against the exciting developments which occur when Ross, much to Prudence’s consternation, gets drawn into a very dangerous situation. I found that I was reading with bated breath hoping that everything would work out for both Ross and Prudence as each deserve to find happiness.

The author is an accomplished writer of Regency fiction which shows itself in the effortless way the story evolves bringing the  Georgian era to life in a very enjoyable way. A Marquis in Want of a Wife continues the Liberated Ladies series of historical novels and whilst it is perfectly possible to read each book as a standalone story there is a little overlap with some characters which helps to give the series a lovely sense of continuity.

A Marquis in Want of a Wife has all the right ingredients for an engaging read, lively excitement, smouldering passion, and a thoroughly likeable hero and heroine.

Publication Day Push and Giveaway ~ The Scoundrel's Bartered Bride by Virginia Heath ☼

☼ Delighted to be involved in the Publication Day Push ☼

Mills and Book
1 July 2020

My thanks to Rachel's Random Resources for my invitation to this Publication Day Push
and my e-copy of this book

Marriage...

To the highest bidder Lady Lydia Barton cannot seem to avoid Owen Wolfe since he returned after being wrongly transported for stealing her family’s jewels! But Lydia has more pressing problems like her impending arranged marriage. Until Owen makes her father a counteroffer for her hand. Is Owen purely after her society connections? Or does Lydia dare hope that the charming stable boy she once loved is still within her ruthless, wealthy new husband.

What did I think about it..

In order to save her family from financial ruin, Lady Lydia Barton is offered, by her unscrupulous father, to the richest bidder, but by no stretch of the imagination is this going to be a joyous family occasion. However, at the last minute, another proposal of marriage comes from the one person who Lydia has been at pains to avoid. Handsome and charismatic, Owen Wolfe has a chequered history with Lydia's family and it is this connection which runs like a thread throughout the story. As the story unfolds we start to understand the reason behind Lydia's reticence with Owen and although, due to their shared past, their relationship is never going to be straightforward, there's a real sense of the righting of old wrongs, even though, as we find during the course of the story, this isn't going to be achieved easily.

Throughout The Scoundrel's Bartered Bride there's a real sense of romance, and from the very start, Lydia and Owen's tumultuous relationship adds a bit of fire, along with a sizzling amount of sexual chemistry, which sparkles between them. However, it's not all plain sailing and there are some dreadful moments for Lydia, especially concerning her family, who are a constant source of annoyance but I especially liked Owen's back story, and wanted everything to work out for him, that he is gloriously handsome into the mix, helps a lot too!

Delightfully engaging, The Scoundrel's Bartered Bride has everything needed for a touching romance - a feisty heroine and a handsome hero, great peripheral characters who you both love and loathe in equal measure, and a convoluted mystery which keeps you guessing until the end.

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

Mini Blog Blitz ~ The Warrior Knight and the Widow by Ella Matthews

Delighted to be one of today's stops on this Mini Blog Blitz

Mills & Boon
19 March 2020

My thanks to the author for my copy of this book
and top Random Things Tours for my invitation to be part of this book tour

Protected by The Beast

Undone by the man

Racing cross country pursued by danger, widow Lady Ellena Swein isn’t pleased to be taken back to her father’s castle. But with his knight Sir Braedan Leofri, also known as The Beast, as her captor, she has little choice! Ellena is surprised by his honourable and protective nature, even if she shouldn’t trust him. And when all seems to conspire against them, Braedan’s secret could either extinguish the spark between them or make it burn brighter.

What did I think about it..

Despite her objection, newly widowed, Lady Ellena Swein is being escorted back to her father's castle. Sir Braedan Leofric's, reputation as a dangerous warrior goes before him, nicknamed 'The Beast', he has been charged with delivering Lady Swein back into her father's safekeeping, however, the road back to Ogmore Castle is fraught with danger, a danger which will test both Ellena and Braedan to their absolute limit of endurance.

What then follows is an entertaining historical romp which has all the necessary ingredients for a lively medieval adventure. There's danger aplenty for Ellena as she is pursued across country, and Braedan has to keep his considerable wits about him in order to keep them both safe from those dastardly enemies who seek to do them harm.

This is the author's debut historical romance/adventure and I feel that she has the balance between excitement, danger and passion absolutely spot on. There's an authentic historical feel to the story and more than enough thrills and spills to keep you turning the pages. Of course, there is also the added attraction of a passionate romance and The Warrior Knight and the Widow certainly sizzles with an undercurrent of forbidden and illicit attraction between the high born lady and the fierce-some warrior, with his hidden heart of gold.

I enjoyed getting to know both of these characters who each have their own faults and failings but when up against the worst that can happen both Ellena and Braedan prove themselves to be strong and forceful personalities.

In this current troubling time, I need to read stories which take me to anther time and place, and I found so much to enjoy in reading The Warrior Knight and the Widow that I read the whole book in one delightful sitting.

Mini Blog Blitz ~ Her Dark Knight's Redemption by Nicole Locke

Thrilled to hosting a stop on this Mini Blog Blitz

Mills & Boon

My thanks to the author and Rachel's random Resources for my copy of this book
and the invitation to be part of the blog tour

This man was shadow and night. He was Darkness.

Homeless Aliette is saved from punishment for stealing by a mysterious knight. To stay alive, she’s informed by this stranger that she must claim his child as her own. She should fear the dark knight’s power, yet it’s clear there’s more good to this man than he’s prepared to show. Can she break down the barriers of the tortured knight she calls Darkness?

What did I think about it..

Her Dark Knight’s Redemption is the eighth book in the Lovers and Legends series and even though I hadn’t read any of the previous books I was able to easily enjoy this story on its own merits but, of course, as with any series, it’s best to start at the beginning and work your way along.

At the start of the novel we are introduced to Sir Reynold Warstone whose complicated past and edgy personality means that no-one around him is safe from either his irascibility or constant bad humour. Accustomed to having his own way in everything to do with his life, Reynold enlists the help of Aliette, a homeless young woman who has more than her own fair share of problems, but this complex partnership brings with it complications of a very different nature for both Reynold and Aliette.

Throughout the story there’s an authentic historical feeling and the author certainly brings the thirteenth century alive. I especially enjoyed watching how the relationship between Reynold and Aliette developed and their, at times, passionate responses to each other. There’s a definite sense of light and shade within the story and the author does a great job of keeping the tension high whilst at the same time allowing a passionate love story to develop. I sense that I am being deliberately vague about the plot because it’s far too easy to reveal too much and that would, most certainly, spoil the overall effect of this medieval romance.

I love a good medieval romance and Her Dark Knights’s Redemption definitely has all the right ingredients to entertain. The relationship between the angry dark knight and his beautiful redeemer is  complicated, but the myriad of emotions expressed, from anger, fear, confusion, through to lust, attraction and overwhelming passion, all help to create a lively and entertaining read.

Beautifully written, Her Dark Knight’s Redemption is an fascinating medieval romance. I am sure that fans of this series will enjoy discovering Reynold and Aliette’s passionate love story.

Hist Fic Saturday ~ The Highborn Housekeeper by Sarah Mallory

On Hist Fict Saturday

Let's have some Regency Romance

Saved from Disgrace #3

My thanks to the author for my copy of this book

A disgraced lady

Turned lowly housekeeper

Earl’s daughter Nancy turned her back on the aristocracy when she fled a forced marriage, working as a cook and housekeeper. But in nursing an injured man back to health, Nancy uncovers a deep longing for the dangerously attractive Gabriel, and a surprise: he’s working to protect government secrets! She wants to help him. But to do so, Nancy will have to return to the life she once cast aside…

What did I think about it...

Nancy is travelling home, with her companion, when she comes across a man who has been gravely injured. Nancy's kind hearted nature is such that she cannot leave the man to fend for himself, however, making sure that Gabriel Shaw survives, not only puts Nancy in considerable danger, but also her contact with this very handsome stranger will open up the secrets of Nancy's past which she has successfully kept hidden for twelve years.

There's no doubt that Nancy is a fascinating enigma, she has an air of delicious mystery around her, and yet, as her connection to Gabriel shows, she has a passionate nature and a real zest for life. However, circumstances have made Nancy wary and rather cautious which makes her attraction to Gabriel all the more captivating. Gabriel is every bit as charming and dangerously addictive as all of this author's fine literary heroes. He is gloriously handsome and the powerful sexual attraction between Nancy and Gabriel sizzles right from the start which very quickly make this into a sparkling, and very passionate, romance.

The Highborn Housekeeper has all the trademarks of just what we have come to expect from this series. There is a large amount of danger and intrigue, especially when Nancy and Gabriel become involved in a secret investigation, but there's also a sizzling amount of passion which smoulders between the couple and which tests their burgeoning relationship to the absolute limits.

Those who have read books one and two in the Saved from Disgrace series will already be familiar with Nancy's story, indeed, she and her companion, Mrs Yelland, were active participants in Beauty and the Brooding Lord, and so, this story takes us very nicely into what happened next for them.

Of course, as with all the stories in this series, The Highborn Housekeeper is perfectly capable of standing on its own merits and is a complete story in itself but, as with all series and for greater enjoyment, it's best to invest in this series right from the beginning, and let these wonderful historical romances take you back to Regency England.

Blog Tour ~ The Earl's Irresistible Challenge by Lara Temple

On Hist Fic Saturday

Jaffareadstoo is thrilled to be hosting today's stop on

The Earl's Irresistible Challenge Blog Tour

Mills&Book
December 2018
Book#1 in the Sinful Sinclair Series

My thanks to the publishers and Rachel at Rachel's Random Resources for my e-copy of this book
and the invitation to be part of the blog tour

Could this infamous rake finally have found his countess? Part  One of The Sinful Sinclairs.

When Lucas, Lord Sinclair, receives a mysterious summons from a Miss Olivia Silverdale he’s skeptical about whether he can help her. But Olivia, although eccentric, is in earnest about her quest to restore her late godfather’s reputation. Lucas’s curiosity is piqued, and not just by Olivia’s intelligent eyes and lithe form. A new challenge quickly presents itself: keeping Miss Silverdale at arm’s length!

My thoughts about it..

Olivia Silverdale is a woman on a mission to find out as much as she can about the circumstances surrounding her godfather's untimely demise. To do so she enlists the help of Lucas, Lord Sinclair, a man whose reputation as one of the 'Sinful Sinclairs' goes before him and yet, against Lucas's better judgement, Olivia's feisty eccentricity appeals to him in more ways than one.

The Earl's Irresistible Challenge gets off to a really good start and pretty soon I was completely entranced by Olivia, who, it must be said can be a little bit exasperating at times, however, her steely determination shines through and her ability to handle the irrepressible Earl is to her credit. Lucas is a completely different sort of character, a bit of a rogue most certainly, and yet, his handsome good looks and smouldering passion is, for me, what sets the story alight.

I found much to enjoy in this story which is the first that I have read by this author. Her sense of style and light and easy touch brings both place and people alive. The hoi poloi of Regency London with all of its complicated social nuances comes to life, and whilst perhaps, Olivia is allowed rather more freedom than some Regency young ladies, her strength of character is what makes her so appealing as a leading lady.

With a real sense of history and a good sized dollop of smouldering passion, The Earl's Irresistible Challenge gets the Sinful Sinclairs miniseries off to a really good start. I'm already looking forward to meeting up again with the Sinclairs in the not too distant future.

Lara Temple writes strong, sexy regency romances about complex individuals who give no quarter but do so with plenty of passion. After moving around the world for her career as a financial analyst and business consultant she returned to her childhood love of making up stories, and was surprised to discover that other people don’t mind reading them.

She lives with her husband and two children who are very good about her taking over the kitchen table for her writing (so she can look out over the garden and dream while Oscar the dog keeps her feet warm by sitting on them as she works).

The Earl’s Irresistible Challenge (out December 2018) is the first in her Sinful Sinclair series. In May 2019 Unlaced by the Highland Duke, part of a four book series with three other Harlequin Mills & Boon authors will be released.

What's it all about...

Daughter of a slave…wedded to the warrior

Livia Valeria is furious when she’s ruthlessly gambled away by her intended bridegroom. Luckily, it’s tall, muscled and darkly handsome Roman centurion Marius Varro who wins her as his bride! Livia must hide her Caledonian roots, but when Marius faces a barbarian rebellion at Hadrian’s Wall she must make a choice: her heritage or the husband she’s falling for...

My thoughts about it...

In The Warrior's Bride Prize I escaped back to the days of the Roman occupation of Britannia, back to AD 197 when women were used as little more than commodities to be bought and sold. Livia Valeria has been sent to the north by her ambitious brother to be given in marriage but fate has a funny old way of intervening and Livia ends up in quite a different relationship than she expected.

I really enjoyed this trip back in history and the author has done a great job of recreating a real sense of time and place so that it was easy to become immersed in Roman life. There are enough thrills and spills to make reading the story exciting, with elements of a dark mystery which surrounds Livia's background, which she tries to keep hidden, and also the dangerous task of keeping the empire safe from marauding Caledonians which falls to the brave and handsome, Marius Varro, who is a Roman soldier to the very tips of his finely made leather boots. The romance between the two lead characters fairly sizzles on the page and I enjoyed reading of the challenges they both faced and hoped that everything would work out for them.

The Warrior's Bride Prize is great historical escapism. I read it comfortably over the space of an afternoon, quite at home at the edge of Hadrian's Wall immersed in the life of Livia and Marius. I hope the author will take us back to the Roman empire in future novels.

About the Author

Jenni Fletcher was born on the north coast of Scotland and now lives in Yorkshire, where she writes Medieval, Roman and Victorian romance novels.

She studied English at Cambridge University before doing an MA on Women and Literature in English and a PhD on Victorian & Edwardian literature at Hull. After realising that she was better at writing than teaching, she worked in a number of administrative jobs whilst trying to finish her first book, which was rejected. Thinking there must have been some mistake, she then wrote another, which was fortunately accepted by Harlequin Mills & Boon.

Her favourite Jane Austen novel is Persuasion and her favourite Brontรซ is Anne. If she had to choose a romantic hero it would be John Thornton, but maybe that’s just because she’s Northern.

Blog Blitz ~ The Makings of a Lady by Catherine Tinley

๐ŸŒ  Jaffareadstoo is delighted to be involved in the Blog Blitz for  The Makings of a Lady ๐ŸŒ

Harlequin

My thanks to the author and Rachel's Random Resources for my copy of the book

What's it all about...

Be calm, she thought.

Be gracious. Be twenty-two.

Lady Olivia Fanton is eager to prove she’s no longer a child. However, just as she thinks she’s found a suitable match in the suave Mr Manning, charismatic Captain Jem Ford walks back into her life, bringing with him all the embarrassment of her infatuation four years before! She’s determined to appear mature, distant, friendly. But does she dare hope he’ll notice her as the lady she’s become?

Here's what I thought about it...

This is now the third book in The Chadcombe Marriage mini series and in The Makings of a Lady we follow the story of Lady Olivia Fanton, who, as an eighteen year old, said goodbye to the first man who made her heart flutter. Now aged twenty-two, Olivia still remembers, Jem Ford, the gallant young soldier who stole her heart but, older and a little wiser, Olivia is now looking to find love with an entirely different sort of man.

What then follows is a lovely Regency romance which, set against the background of the Chadcombe estate in Surrey, brings all the sights and flavours of an aristocratic family doing what they do best, that is, entertaining the local gentry with tea parties and balls and riding horses and walking in the countryside.

The author writes this type of gentle romance with a lovely light touch and brings such a warmth to her characters that you can't help but bond with them, and yes, even the dastardly villains, of which there are a few splendid ones in this story, make their own rather special impact. There are several strands to the story, not just the "will they, won't they" aspect of a relationship, but also in the darker elements of the story which together help to create a nice blend of light and shade.

I'm sure that fans of this series will be delighted with The Makings of a Lady as it continues the lovely atmosphere which runs like a ribbon throughout the stories. It was lovely to meet up with the characters from the previous novels, particularly Adam and Charlotte who we met in Waltzing with the Earl and Juliana and Harry who took centre stage in The Captain's Disgraced Lady. However, it must be said that each of the stories work really well on their own merits and can be comfortably read as standalones.

There is no doubt that the author has found a real niche in writing Regency Romance and I think that, there is still scope for more lovely stories within this series. I look forward to seeing what happens next...

Hist Fic Saturday ~ The Ton's Most Notorious Rake by Sarah Mallory

On Hist Fic Saturday

Let's go back to ...Regency England

Mills and Boon
22 February 2018

My thanks to the author for my copy of this book

There's nothing I like better than a good Regency Rake and Beau Russington is up there with the best of them.  Swoon-worthy from the very start of the novel, Beau oozes charisma, sex appeal and more than a hint of danger, in fact, he is everything that Molly Morgan detests. So, when Beau and his equally rakish friends arrive in the small northern village of Compton Parva, Molly is determined to keep these profligate men away from Prospect House, the home she runs for 'fallen women'. That Molly is the main benefactor of this home harks back to a bad experience which happened some time ago in her own past and which has left her distrustful of all men.

I was quite entranced by the story, and found that I thoroughly enjoyed the sparring which goes on between Beau and Molly. Trying to resist the lure of attraction between them is what makes the book so delicious to read. Molly's steadfastness, particularly in her dealings with the women at Prospect House, is to her credit but, it is the intoxicating, and at times infuriating presence of Beau, which sets her heart a fluttering. The other delightful characters who flit into and out of the story add interesting depth, whilst the less than likeable characters add the necessary light and shade,to this well written Regency romp.

If you enjoy Regency romances, with a touch of intrigue and more than a hint of 'will they or won't they' romance, then this story will certainly appeal.

The Captain's Disgraced Lady

Mills and Boon
December 2017

Juliana Milford first meets Captain Harry Fanton in 1815, when she is newly arrived in England from Brussels. She and her mother, Elizabeth are on their way to spend time at Chadcombe House, with Juliana's dear friend Charlotte, who is newly married, but first, they must take rest in The King's Head, a coaching inn, near the port of Dover. Due to unexpected circumstances, the ladies are forced to share the Inn's facilities with Captain Fanton and his companion, which causes Juliana some consternation.

Juliana is shocked when Harry unexpectedly arrives at Chadcombe House and is even more surprised to discover that Harry is none other than Charlotte's brother-in-law. At first Juliana is impervious to Harry's considerable charm but as the story progresses and we are given more of an insight into Juliana's background, we start to see a distinct thawing of the relationship between Harry and Juliana. However, Harry is fighting his own particular demons and doesn't feel that he has anything to offer a prospective bride.

What then follows is a delightful "will they or won't they" Regency romance which is set against the background of the early nineteenth century as the country is preparing for a continuation of the war with Napoleon. And whilst there is a light and easy feel to the story, especially in Juliana's close relationship with her friend, Charlotte, there is also a darker edge which links to a secret in Juliana's past which threatens to spoil her future happiness.

The author writes well and certainly knows how to bring both place and people alive in the imagination. I soon found myself quite immersed in this lovely story and especially enjoyed how several story lines came together to give us a tantalising glimpse of Regency life and of the restrictions placed on women. Having said that, Juliana is a feisty heroine and I enjoyed reading of  her interaction with Harry and hoped that everything would work out well for them.

It's been a long time since I immersed myself in a Regency romance and I had quite forgotten how much I enjoy reading them. The Captain's Disgraced Lady is a really enjoyable example of the genre and I am sure will appeal to those readers who enjoy this type of historical romantic fiction.

I recently discovered that this is the second book in the Chadcombe marriage series, the first book being Waltzing with the Earl, which gives us Charlotte's story. However, I didn’t feel at a disadvantage for not having read the first book as The Captain's Disgraced Lady sits comfortably on its own merits as a lovely standalone story.
