Jean Mead's Itty Bitty Christmas....

Wishing you a merry Christmas

from

What’s your earliest Christmas Memory?

My earliest memory would be going with an uncle to cut a Christmas tree in the woods, and then dragging it home. It was our first real tree and it was huge, reaching to the ceiling of the Victorian room. I recall the entire family decorating it with Christmas treasures, glass baubles, feathered birds, and small candles, which my father lit for a short time that evening. If he was terrified that the house may be burned down he didn’t show it. The memory and the magical excitement of Christmas Eve is bound up in the flickering candlelight and the scent of the tree that night.

Do you have any special Christmas Traditions?

Christmas Eve is always spent with my siblings and their spouses. We really enjoy raking up memories of past Christmases as we tuck into a baked ham and home-made mince-pies accompanied by plenty of red wine. It is probably the silliest night of the year and the most fun.

Do you have a favourite festive film?

Favourite Christmas films are the sort where you can cuddle a child on the sofa and watch it for the umpteenth time, but through their eyes, a great way to resurrect the magic of Christmas for you.

What’s your favourite festive read ?

Favourite Christmas book has to be ‘The Night Before Christmas’ read to a little one before bed on Christmas Eve.

Are you organised or do you leave everything until the last minute ?

Mostly I am organised, presents are purchased early and wrapped in good time. This year for some reason I have lost the plot and very little is done, and it promises to be a mad dash and frayed nerves at the last minute.

Christmas Tree – real or artificial?

We always have a real tree, ours stands in the dining room, away from inquisitive and naughty cats. I like to open the door in the morning and breathe the scent of pine.

Tinsel or Glitter?

Not keen on tinsel but like glitter, especially on Christmas cards, it’s a childhood thing. Hang glittery decorations on the tree to catch the sparkle of the tree lights.

Gingerbread Latte or Orange spiced Hot Chocolate?

Never had a Gingerbread Latte or Orange spiced Hot Chocolate but if asked I think I would choose the orangey chocolate.

Mince Pie or Yule Log?

Warm mince-pies are a favourite they beat the Yule Log every time.

Christmas Dinner – Traditional Turkey or something Different?

This year we are having a turkey it will be stuffed early and basted in goose fat for extra flavour.

Christmas Tipple – Bucks Fizz/Mulled Wine or something stronger?

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a pre-lunch Bucks Fizz, sipped whilst cooking.

A fun game of after dinner charades or more chocolates and the television?

Charades is the game of choice, and certain relatives are already practising for the evening’s entertainment. I don’t need to practise, I go through the rigmarole of making everyone guess book titles and every year no one comes up with the correct answer which is The Widow Makers, Kate’s Secret, or Freya 800 AD. Their lack of recall from previous Christmas charades has something to do with the wine consumed.
