Day 16 of the 30 day book talk...

Favourite Female Character

I suppose the direct match for my favourite male character would be to choose his wife Claire Fraser as my favourite female character, and to some extent she is the perfect match for Jamie - she's a strong and determined woman and is equal to the task of keeping Jamie in check....

But my real favourite female character is  Elizabeth Bennett from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice..

Pride and Prejudice, first published in 1813, follows the fortunes of Elizabeth Bennett, as she tackles the  complicated process of matchmaking in the early part of the nineteenth century. When the story opens, Elizabeth is 20 years old. and the second eldest daughter in a family of five girls. When faced with the prospect of an interfering mother, and a shortage of eligible men in the county who have a  disposable income, Elizabeth must suffer the indignity of being paraded before county's eligible bachelors.

Enter, 28 year old bachelor, Fitzwilliam Darcy, he's mean , moody, sardonic and definitely not someone who would be attracted to spirited and opinionated Elizabeth Bennett....of course, time will prove him wrong.

Elizabeth's feisty attitude and her sheer determination as she fights for her family and her place in society is Jane Austen at her absolute best.

I loved Jennifer Ehle's characterisation of Elizabeth Bennett in the 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice .... alongside Colin Firth - they made the perfect Darcy and Elizabeth.

  1. Oh, I agree! I love Claire, but I've listed Elizabeth Bennett as my favorite female character in the past too. :-)
