📖 My Review..

When newlywed Kelly finds her husband in a compromising clinch with his best friend’s wife she is distraught and abandons her wedding reception and leaves for her honeymoon, alone.  With her marriage over before it’s begun, Kelly decides to use the honeymoon to decide what to do next but is horrified when her cheating husband arrives along with two other surprise guests.

This is definitely one of those stories which is better off read in one sitting or at least within a few days because once started you can’t stop but wonder what on earth is going to happen next to Kelly. Even her idyllic honeymoon retreat is filled with one crisis after another, it was hard to imagine how so much misfortune could befall someone in the space of just a few days. Cleverly written, with twists and turns galore The Honeymoon is really a story of two halves, one of the honeymoon period in Crete and the other when Kelly and her cheating husband, Ryan, arrive back home, that’s when the story takes a decidedly sinister turn which had me on the edge of my seat.

The Honeymoon is fast paced domestic thriller which kept me entertained from start to finish.

About the Author

Gemma Rogers was inspired to write gritty thrillers by a traumatic event in her own life nearly twenty years ago. Her debut novel Stalker was published in September 2019 and marked the beginning of a new writing career. Gemma lives in West Sussex with her husband and two daughters.

📖My review..

When a lovely family move in next door Vanessa is thrilled to have someone she can be friends with and her two sons, Lucas and Jacob, seem happy to spend time with Rachel who is the girl next door. However when a devastating tragedy occurs the finger of blame is firmly pointed at Vanessa and her family. Tensions run high in this chilling domestic thriller which looks at how quickly things can spiral out of control and with so many people keeping secrets both Vanessa and the investigating police team seem unable to discover the truth  around who was there when Rachel’s accident occurred.

This is such an all consuming story that I read the whole of the book in a couple of sittings eager to discover more about these two families who seem to have been heading on a collision course from the moment they all met. With difficult conversations and heightened emotions the story gallops along at a good pace and to be honest although I thought I had the conclusion worked out I was surprised by the ending which wrapped everything up in a satisfying sort of way. Girl Next Door definitely has enough  domestic drama to keep you guessing until the end.

She loves writing about the complexities of relationships. 📖 My Review..

Although Sarah Westfield is married to the perfect husband she is strangely dissatisfied with everything about her life. When her husband Nick persuades her to have a baby Sarah instinctively knows this is the wrong decision for her and yet she finds herself agreeing that a baby would be good for them. When the baby arrives Sarah is just as cold towards motherhood as she is towards her husband.

What then follows is a convoluted story which takes Sarah on  nightmare journey which looks at the complicated bonds of motherhood, marriage and female friendship and wraps them all together in a story which grabs our attention right from the opening prologue which hints at dark deeds ahead.

This clever author never fails to offer up a really good story. Filled with all the twists, turns and red herrings which we have come to expect, I love how all the loose ends come together and even though I try and second guess the ending I am never completely correct and that's what makes these clever thrillers such a joy to read. The Mother doesn't let up on excitement until the climax with an ending to the story which more than matched my expectations.

📖 My Review..

Following their mother’s death, siblings Beth, Nicole and Michael are forced to confront some uncomfortable truths, not just about themselves but more especially when it comes to light that their parents were involved in a cover up which, if revealed, will destroy everything the family knew to be true.

I was quickly drawn into this story which looks at sibling connections and of the festering resentments which stem from their childhood. In a series of cleverly revealed clues, and with some spoken from the past, we learn of the reasons why the siblings are all so disconnected from each other. Grief and unresolved addiction are both topics which feature heavily and the author controls these emotive subjects with compassion and empathy so that it is possible to feel sympathy for the characters as they struggle through their perceptions of what happened so many years ago. Re-visiting the past is never easy and Beth, Nicole and Michael each have complicated reasons why the past should remain in the past.

The  brooding nature of a small American town is expertly done and I could well imagine the siblings growing up in a tight family unit with parents who were doing what they thought needed to be done. The story flows well, the plot is tight and the clues are revealed gradually so that when the final denouement comes there are a few surprises which I didn’t see coming. Home is Where the Bodies Are is a well written domestic thriller about about the far reaching effects that a local tragedy had on this troubled family and of the deep, dark secrets which, once revealed, can never be forgiven, or forgotten.

📖 My Review..

Emerson is post-recovery following a traumatic incident involving her baby daughter which resulted in the disintegration of her family and necessitated Emerson spending time in hospital. On her release her one main aim is to be reunited with her young son, Leo, who is currently in the custody of his father and his new girlfriend. What then follows is a highly emotive story of a mother’s quest to reclaim her son however, events conspire against her and in a hugely complex domestic thriller we discover the lengths people will go in order to seek revenge.

I raced through The Wife at the Window in almost one sitting as it’s one of those stories which once started you can’t put down. Emerson’s story is told with compassion so that we are soon on her side and want everything to work out for her. Her ex-husband Shep and his girlfriend, Talia are not so likeable but are definitely intriguing and I whilst I didn’t feel any empathy for them I found their story equally fascinating.

The ultimate twist in the tale is cleverly done and I truly didn’t see it coming, so all credit to the author for keeping the momentum and offering twists, turns and surprises in a complex domestic thriller which kept me engaged from start to finish.

📖 My review…

After receiving an inheritance Rachel, her husband, and small son relocate from Manchester to Cornwall. This move should have been the start of a new life for the three of them with everything to look forward to, however, it soon becomes obvious that there are differences in this marriage and even the most idyllic of settings can’t cover up the cracks.

You Me Her is a fast moving thriller which gets more and more complicated as the story progresses especially with the introduction of a character who soon becomes something of a nightmare. I really enjoyed watching how the drama unfolded and whilst none of the major characters were particularly likeable there was more than enough twists and turns to keep me guessing about who did what to whom and why! That there is danger ahead for Rachel is done really well and the hint of a past trauma in her life helps to keep the tension cranked up high. There’s never a moment when the pace slackens and author keeps this momentum going throughout the whole of the story.

You Me Her is an immersive and atmospheric story which really stretches the imagination and keeps you guessing until the final twist in the tale.

📖 My Review

Elise King is recuperating at home after surgery but once a police detective always a detective as Elise soon discovers when she is inadvertently drawn into a complex mystery surrounding the disappearance of Charlie Perry, an elderly man from the pretty seaside village of Ebbing. Ebbing, once a close community, is now fractured by the arrival of weekenders who threaten the equilibrium of the place and yet, Dee Eastwood, a local cleaner, who straddles both worlds, gets to hear all sorts of things and is privy to secrets which are better not disclosed.

Local Gone Missing has all the trademarks of this author's fine writing skills with a cast of wonderful characters who really bring this complex plot to life. Moving forwards and backwards in time we get to know more about Charlie who seems to have been quite a character in his past, and as the reasons why he may have gone missing start to evolve so the plot gets tighter and tighter, with lots of spiraling twists, unexpected turns and more than enough red herrings to keep you guessing.

Fiona Barton is one of those authors who never fails to entertain with intricate plot twists which keep you guessing and Local Gone Missing is no exception. A really great read and wonderful escapism for a summer afternoon in the garden 😊

Now, as midnight on New Year’s Eve approaches, the three women will face the consequences of a long-ago holiday, one which changed their lives forever … and threatens to shatter their perfect worlds into perfect pieces.

My thoughts..

The people who live in White Fir Lake are not as they seem but because the place is so idyllic we are lulled into a false sense of security as. far beneath the surface. carefully hidden secrets are buried. When an unexpected stranger arrives in their midst there is the possibly that everything they had so carefully hidden away over the years is about to be revealed. 

The author has created a great sense of a community at White Fir Lake and I enjoyed getting to know those who call the place home, especially Verity and Frankie, close friends who share their secrets, and worries, over copious bottles of wine. The story moves along at a good pace and it's interesting to see the perspective from the point of view of Verity and Frankie and also getting to know Alice, a relative newcomer to the group and who, it would seem, has an agenda all of her own. 

I enjoyed watching how the story unfolded and the complicated twists and turns in the plot helped to focus the energy on what was to be revealed in the final denouement on the night of the traditional New Year's Eve party which is always hosted by Verity and her artist husband Max. There's such a lot of activity going on which I can't reveal but going back into the past with these characters reveals some ghastly secrets and the story definitely kept me turning the pages to find out more.

I found The New Year's Eve Party to be an intriguing domestic thriller and a great way to spend an afternoon at this time in the festive calendar.

📖My thoughts...

When Rachel finds a body in the woods she instinctively runs away, however, her actions that morning will have long lasting repercussions. For Rachel is no stranger to tragedy and it's only when the story gets underway that we start to learn just what has brought Rachel to this particular moment in time. 

Without giving away any spoilers I can say that the story is divided into two distinct time frames where we follow the story of Rachel in the here and now, and twenty years ago when she was known as Casey who finds herself working, as a nanny, in Los Angeles, with an interesting, and rather dysfunctional, family. It's not clear, at first, just what these two sides of one character have in common but as this clever thriller continues, all will be revealed.

I flew through I know You in almost one sitting, as it is very easy to get into the story and both time elements are done cleverly so that you get drawn into two quite separate tragedies. The author writes this genre well and she certainly builds the tension to a high level with neither story seeking to outshine the other. As the plot progresses, I did sort of guess where it was heading but that didn't spoil my overall enjoyment of the story and there were some twists which I didn't see coming at all.

I know You is a cleverly put together murder/mystery written with a interesting plot and a great set of characters.

📖 My thoughts...

Leaving her baby son with her mum, Tallulah heads off to the local pub with her boyfriend. All is well until the early hours of the morning when Tallulah's mum, Kim realises that Tallulah hasn't returned home and even though she traces her daughter's last known whereabouts, and despite an intensive police search of the local area neither Tallulah, nor her boyfriend, Zach are found. Two years later and Sophie is walking in the woods near to the property where she and her partner have just moved  and she comes across a mysterious message which opens up the cold case once more to scrutiny.

The Night She Disappeared is a powerful and compelling psychological thriller which grabs grabs your attention right from the opening prologue and doesn't let go for a single minute. It's quite a chilling story, especially in the description of Dark Place, an old mansion which features strongly and which not only adds an air of gothic gloom but also a sense of creeping menace. It's definitely one of those stories which is best read in one sitting and even though I was reading the book on one of the hottest days of the year I definitely felt an anticipatory chill in my bones as I read on to the startling conclusion.

The Night She Disappeared is Lisa Jewell writing at her absolute best in a powerful psychological thriller which will keep you guessing from start to finish.

Review ~The Other Woman by Sandie Jones

What's it all about..

My thoughts about it..

Well, this one took me by surprise !

This is a real roller coaster of a story which starts off with cracking prologue. And then its fairly innocuous beginning lulls you into a false sense of security, but don't be fooled as very soon the story grips like a vice and it quickly becomes completely addictive reading. I'm only sorry that's it's languished on my book shelf for a few months, but, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining, and because of my tardiness, I'm in time to share my thoughts about The Other Woman just as the book has its US publication 😉

I'm not saying anything about the plot except to share the teaser of an explanation which is from the blurb at the back of the book. All I will say is that I devoured The Other Woman in less than half a day as I quite simply couldn't put it down, always wanting to read just a little bit more in order to find out just what was going on in the life of Emily and Adam, and that of the other woman in Adam's life, namely his mother, Pammie. And believe me , there's plenty going on...

Beautifully written from start to finish, this fast paced domestic noir has a dramatic plot which is as tight as a bowstring, it's no surprise that this debut novel was highly sought after by several publishers. If you want an absolute corker of a thriller then my advise is to read this without spoilers, that way you'll be as stunned as I was when the final denouement comes. 

Without doubt one of my reads of the summer..
