Bookshop.org’s audiobooks launch allows indie bookshops to earn full profit on audiobook sales for the first time

From, Wednesday 8 July 2026: Bookshop.org, the ethical alternative to Amazon that supports independent bookshops, is launching its new audiobook offer. For the first time, readers can buy books in all formats from indie bookshops. LISTEN UP. Audiobook listening station at Real Magic Books

Customers will be able to buy and listen to audiobooks on one easy-to-use platform, while financially supporting indie bookshops in their fight against Amazon (who owns Audible). Audiobooks will be available to buy on a subscription model priced at £12.99 per credit/month, which has been designed to generate the most revenue for indie bookshops.

To mark the launch, Bookshop.org will offer exclusive audiobook content to listeners, which will be available exclusively when buying an audiobook from their platform. These “indie exclusives” include:

  • A speech by Meta whistleblower and Careless People author Sarah Wynn-Williams, about the “analogue tenacity of books” in the face of powerful people trying to silence important stories.

  • A conversation between best-selling thriller writer Adele Parks and her narrator, Kristin Atherton, answering questions collected from her readers & listeners.

  • An exclusive new lecture from journalist and historian Max Hastings about bravery and valour across wars.

  • A message directly from Cody Dahler, author of The State of This!

  • An exclusive conversation between Ellery Lloyd, thriller author of Time to Burn, and narrator Louise Brealey.

The audiobook market in the UK is growing rapidly, with no signs of slowing down. The most recent data provided by the Publishers Association revealed that in 2025, audiobooks were worth £255 million, up 10% on the previous year – significant in comparison to the overall publishing industry which only grew by 3%. A 2025 study by YouGov has shown that 30% of readers listened to audiobooks in the previous year.

While the number of independent bookshops in the UK and Ireland has risen from 1,025 to 1,086 in the last year, reaching its highest level since 2012, bookshops are still struggling with surging operational costs.

With audiobooks, Bookshop.org offers booksellers a meaningful, regular revenue stream, and a tool to advance their growth. Readers will now be able to support their local booksellers through audiobook subscriptions, while benefiting from human recommendations and the valued community that independent bookshops are uniquely positioned to deliver.

In our National Year of Reading, celebrating and encouraging all forms of storytelling – including audiobooks – is key to aiding access and development of a genuine passion for reading. Research by the National Literacy Trust revealed that 37.5% of children and young people said listening to audiobooks 'sparked their interest' in reading. There is also evidence that audiobooks support wellbeing, help close gender gaps in enjoyment, inspire interest in reading and widen access to stories. Bookshop.org’s new offering marks a crucial step towards diversifying sources for readers to find their reading fix.

Carl Gosling and Sophie Green, from Real Magic Books: “It is fantastic that our customers will be able to use Bookshop.org for audiobooks, we’re asked about it all the time. Audiobook-loving Real Magic regulars want to be able to come in the shop, browse and use our enthusiasm and recommendations to inform their next audiobook choice. We want all audiobook users to feel fully part of our community and to be able to shop ethically on the high street. It is a huge win for independent bookshops.”

Andy Rossiter, from Rossiter Books: “We are delighted the audiobook option has been added to the offering on Bookshop.org. The ‘anytime, anywhere’ nature of listening to audiobooks is really appealing and the market is growing rapidly. Having them added to Bookshop.org is a great way to get more people into more books and to give indie booksellers access to this expanding market.”

Rosamund de la Hey, from The Main Street Trading Company: “As an indie bookseller and huge fan of listening as well as reading, it’s wonderful news that our online partner, Bookshop.org, are launching audiobooks.”

Kit de Waal, Author of The Best of Everything and My Name is Leon: “Listening to someone tell us a story is the most intimate and the oldest form of storytelling there is. That’s only one reason audiobooks are so appealing. If you add in a great narrator and the fact that you can multitask reading and commuting or housework or gardening and you have the most wonderful way of reading more books for pleasure, for work or for education. And your local independent bookshop is just the place to get started. Tell them your tastes and they will definitely know what to recommend.”

Nicole Vanderbilt, Managing Director of Bookshop.org UK, said: “We’re excited to be launching a whole new product that offers a significant, and importantly, regular revenue stream for independent bookshops. Audiobooks have become such an important part of the way we tell stories and a vital part of the book industry's growth. We are excited to give the 30% of readers who have listened to an audiobook in the last year a better way to buy their audiobooks: there's no reason for them to turn to Amazon now! With our new subscription service, indie bookshops benefit from every credit purchased.”

๐ŸŽง Publication Day Feature ~ Tansy Bloom, Monster Hunter by L.J.Weller

AUDIBLE RELEASES NEW ORIGINAL, TANSY BLOOM, MONSTER HUNTER, BY DEBUT AUTHOR L.J. WELLER

NARRATED BY TANYA REYNOLDS

Audible
27 June 2024

My thanks to Midas for my Audible copy of this book

Audible, a leading provider of spoken word entertainment, has announced Sex Education star Tanya Reynolds will narrate a new and exciting Audible Original title from debut novelist L.J. Weller.

Three months ago, twenty-eight-year-old Tansy Bloom quit monster hunting. Since then, she’s been trying to live a normal life (whatever that means), but ending up single, unemployed, and living on a boat outside her godfather’s pub definitely wasn’t part of the plan. So, when Tansy’s ex-husband – fellow monster hunter Rex Barclay – turns up like a bad penny and asks for her help with his latest investigation, Tansy reluctantly agrees.

At first, the job appears to be a straightforward monster hunt – following a spate of large creature sightings, Rex believes a werewolf is on the loose in Norfolk, and he intends to capture it. But Tansy’s not convinced. For one thing, the mysterious black dog Rex is hunting is able to vanish into thin air. For another, everyone who’s encountered the black dog is dying in a series of freak accidents.

Bad news for Tansy, who’s just come face-to-face with the creature herself.

๐ŸŽง My thoughts..

I'm currently listening to Tansy Bloom, Monster Hunter and enjoying both the story and the narration. I'm sure that the 10 hours and 44 minutes will pass by very quickly. Review will follow in the fullness of time. In the meantime you can discover more by going to http://www.audible.co.uk

L.J. Weller, author of Tansy Bloom, Monster Hunter, said: “I’m thrilled to be working with Audible to bring my debut novel to life. From day one, Audible has championed this book with enthusiasm and excitement, and collaborating with the team has been a wonderful experience. I hope everyone enjoys listening to Tansy Bloom, Monster Hunter as much as I enjoyed writing it!”

Tanya Reynolds, narrator and actor, said: “Recording audiobooks can be quite challenging, but when you can totally lose yourself in the world that you're reading, it is such a joy, and this was indeed a joy. All the characters were so vibrant on the page and so fun to read, and the story itself is a joyful journey into mythical folklore with a wicked sense of humour. I had so much fun recording this.”

Tanya Reynolds landed her first major role as a series regular on the Sky 1 comedy-drama Delicious. She is also well known for playing Lily Iglehart in the Netflix comedy-drama Sex Education where she was a part of the main cast in the first three seasons. Other credits include Outlander, Death in Paradise, Emma, Dodger, The Baby, I Hate You and The Decameron.

Tansy Bloom, Monster Hunter will be available exclusively on Audible from 27th June and out now from Audible at http://www.audible.co.uk.

๐Ÿ“– A Life in Words ~ Ursula Bloom Podcast

Ursula Bloom

My thanks to Ian Skillicorn for permission to feature this podcast

Ursula Bloom: A Life in Words, is a five-part podcast based on the autobiographical writing of bestselling author Ursula Bloom. The podcast is part of a current revival of Ursula's work. Wyndham Books is reissuing her novels (as ebooks, with paperbacks to follow) and the British Library recently chose one of her novels (writing as Mary Essex) for its acclaimed Women Writers series.

Ursula was a fascinating figure, and a household name for most of her life. Between 1924 and 1981 she wrote over 560 books, which at one point earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. As well as novels, Ursula wrote short stories, and radio and stage plays. She was also a Fleet Street journalist, with such varied roles as agony aunt, beauty editor and chief crime reporter. The podcast is a great insight into life on the home front in World War I, and the world of publishing books, newspapers and magazines in the 1920s to 1940s.

The Podcast is available to listen for free from :

Ursula's words are read by Lisa Armytage

My thoughts..

Ursula Bloom was a prolific writer whose fifty-seven year writing career spanned over 500 books. As well as writing under her own name she also used several pen names and wrote a variety of genres. This podcast looks back at the life of this extraordinary writer.

Although I had heard of Ursula Bloom, and vaguely remember my mother occasionally reading her novels, I didn't know very much about Ursula Bloom's life so this autobiographical podcast has been really informative. Much of twentieth century literary history is now confined to the annals of the past, so reissuing this author's interesting writing is helping to keep history alive in an easily accessible format.

The podcasts are well produced and are free to listen providing you have access to one of the streaming services mentioned above. I'm a frequent user of Spotify so it was no trouble at all to find the podcast and listen at my leisure. Broadcast in five parts, this autobiographical account takes us from Ursula's early life during the Great War, through to her prolific career as a successful writer, Fleet Street journalist and agony aunt. The podcasts are perfectly narrated by Lisa Armytage and give a fascinating account of Ursula's life and a great insight into a long forgotten way of life.

I've really enjoyed listening to A Life in Books and each podcast is such an interesting way to learn more about the life and times of this fascinating author. I look forward to discovering Ursula Bloom's fine writing which is now reissued in ebook format by Wyndham Books and the chance to rediscover Ursula Bloom's writing for myself.

Ursula Bloom was one of the most popular bestselling authors of the twentieth century. She wrote over 560 books, a feat which earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for many years, as the world’s most prolific female writer. She also wrote short stories, radio and stage plays, and worked as a Fleet Street journalist.
