☼ I'm delighted to welcome author Sue Moorcroft to our Summer picnic ☼

☼Welcome back to Jaffareadstoo, Sue. What favourite foods are you bringing to our summer picnic?

Chicken, salad, crusty bread and rich chocolate cake. (Damn the calories!)

☼What would you like to drink? We have white wine spritzers, locally brewed beer, traditional Pimms, sparkling elderflower cordial, or a thermos of tea or coffee

I’ll have beer and black tea, please, if that’s not too greedy.

☼Where shall we sit, by the pool, in the garden, in the countryside or somewhere hot?

Somewhere hot every time! I love hot weather. I think I’m part lizard because I like to bask.

☼Do we have a wicker hamper, tablecloth and cutlery, or is everything in a supermarket carrier bag?

The hamper - definitely. How gracious and elegant. Hopefully there’s a cold section for the beer and the chocolate cake. If not, I’ll bring my cool bag.

☼Do you have favourite place to have a summer picnic?

Somewhere quiet, where we can hear the birds sing. Maybe a grassy clifftop spangled with wildflowers? We’d be able to see and hear the sea, too.

☼Which of your literary heroes (alive or dead) are joining us on the picnic today?

Nevil Shute. He wrote such an amazing catalogue of books and taught me how important an epic love story can be.

☼Which summer read are you bringing with you today?

Whispers of the Runes by Christina Courtenay. It’s an advance reading copy - lucky me! I love her books.

☼What is your earliest summer memory?

I think it must be the garden of a house my family lived in a village called Cove in Hampshire. We were an army family and Dad was stationed at nearby Aldershot. I can remember digging in the garden and making roads for cars.

☼Do you have a summer music playlist ? And if so will you share with us a favourite song or piece of music that makes you feel happy?

The first song that came into my mind is from when I was a young teen and we had a hot summer. It’s Jeans On by David Dundas. It originated from a TV ad for Brutus jeans, I think. It was a happy time. I don’t have a summer playlist, as such.

☼Do you find that your reading tastes differ between winter and summer?

A little. It’s the number of winter books that come out for Christmas that dictate it, I suppose. That said, I’m happy to read a Christmas book in August or a beach read in December.

☼Do you find it easier to write in the summer months or during the winter?

It doesn’t matter. I have two books a year to write so I write all the time. I do love to take writing breaks in summer, when I can. A balcony in Malta makes a wonderful writing room.

☼What can you tell us about your current book or WIP?

Under the Italian Sun concerns Zia-Lucia Costa Chalmers. She sets out to discover her unknown father and is shocked to find two birth certificates and two death certificates for her mother and realises there were two different women named Victoria Chalmers. Her search for the truth takes her to a rocky plateau overlooking the family vineyard of Piero Domenicali, who lives nearby. He’s desperately trying to hang on to his home and their stories become entangled.
