I wanted to share this lovely book of World War One short stories on Mothering Sunday, not because the stories are particularly about mothers, but more because the stories act as a poignant reminder to us about what happened during the eventful years of the Great War, when so many mother's sons were being sent to fight a in war that few of them really understood.

There are nine short stories in this volume. All are really fine examples of the short story genre, perfect within themselves and encapsulating all that is good and poignant about WW1 stories.

They are in order:

The Daughter of Belgium by Marci Jefferson
The Record Set Straight by Lauren Willig
All for the Love of You by Jennifer Robson
After You've Gone by Evangeline Holland
Something Worth Landing For by Jessica Brockmole
Hour of the Bells by Heather Webb
An American in Paris by Beatriz Williams
The Photograph by Kate Kerrigan
The Hush by Hazel Gaynor

A few of these talented authors are already familiar to me, whilst others I hope to discover more about in the weeks/months to come. But what really shines through is their collective love of writing and their commitment to the fine art of story telling. I can't single out one story above others as all are equally fascinating and totally absorbing.

Some of the stories are slightly longer than others but all are easily readable in one sitting and what I especially loved was the fine attention to detail in each story and also the personal dedications which follow at the end of a few of the stories which remind us that writing gets into the heart and soul of what's really important.

My thanks to the author Hazel Gaynor who offered me the chance to read this book
and for the personally signed copy which I will treasure.

Happy Mothering Sunday.
