📖 Book Review ~ Ten Poems about Sewing from Candlestick Press

Sewing isn’t just one thing – it can be patchwork, quilting, cross-stitch, darning, upcycling, sewing by hand or by machine. It can also be embroidery, as in the Bayeux Tapestry with its vivid scenes depicting the medieval world. A poem here celebrates a group of nineteenth century women who made a copy of that remarkable artefact:

“…We have sewn

ourselves into the woof and warp of cloth, thread by thread…”

The selection captures the quiet pleasures of all kinds of sewing. There are moments of thoughtful recollection: a mother who takes in evening piecework and a father sewing buttons onto his army uniform. What emerges is the powerful idea that sewing is a profoundly human activity – one that connects us to each other, to our families and friends and also to the past.

📖 My Review

With the recent arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry to London and the final of The Great British Sewing Bee on television it would seem that sewing is having a much needed revival. My mother was a fine seamstress but sadly she did not pass her needleworking skills on to me however, I remain impressed by those talented people who can take a piece of cloth and turn it into something wonderfully creative. The skill of the embroiderers back in the 11th century, who created the masterpiece that is the Bayeux Tapestry, can only be looked upon with awe.

This collection of Ten Poems about Sewing celebrates the skill of needleworking in all its many guises.

This lovely poem reminded me of my mother who left school at fourteen to work in a Lancashire sewing factory and who used a singer sewing machine at home to make the family’s clothes and who would also lick the thread …

“ You think you are a bird and your station is the sky

Lick the thread and feed it through the needle’s eye.”

I am reminded of my love of pocket handkerchiefs in this lovely poem which is so reminiscent of a bygone era …

“Cambridge - with grateful blessings would I pay

The pleasure given me in sweet employ;

Long mayest though serve my friend without decay,

And have no tears to wipe but tears of joy”

This fascinating collection of ten poems about sewing is another great example of finding beauty in the ordinary events of life, be it in the feel of fabric or a piece of embroidery, in quilting or plain stitching, in top stitching or simply hemming handkerchiefs, there is something to enjoy for everyone who loves sewing. From its colourful cover, with its upright manikins and old fashioned sewing machines, to its similarly designed endpapers, Ten Poems about Sewing would make a splendid gift instead of a card for anyone who has an interest in stitching either professionally or as an enthusiastic amateur.
