The Secret of Creek Cottage is a tale that follows the lives of two families, almost a century apart. 1916: While the Great War rages through Europe, in the small coastal village of Trunrowan, Cornwall, life for Loveday Nance could not be more different. With her husband Will away fighting, the reality of having a longed-for child of her own seems to be slipping away with each day that passes. Present-day: Kitty and Ben Gridley decide to leave their busy lives in Bristol hoping for a quieter way of life in the pretty village of Trunrowan, Cornwall. Little do they realise the impact that moving into Creek Cottage will have on them. When Kitty begins to experience strange things happening at the cottage, she is certain there is a secret harboured within its stone walls.

What did I think about it..

This time slip novel gets off to an atmospheric start as we are introduced to the lives of two couples who live at Creek Cottage in Trunrowan, 100 years hundred apart. In the present, Kitty and Ben Gridley have relocated to this small Cornish town, hoping that by leaving their busy lives in Bristol they can find the peace and tranquility they crave. Back in time to 1916, and Loveday and Will Nance are facing very different challenges as Will is caught up in the devastating after effects of his time as a soldier during WW1.

Time Slip novels are notoriously difficult to get right but I think the author has managed this very well as both time aspects of the novel sit comfortably together as neither one seeks to outshine the other. I was equally interested in reading about Kitty and Ben's modern life, as I was about Loveday and Will's complicated life in the early part of the twentieth century. The story is nicely told capturing both the historical perspective and the complexities of modern day life. Scattered throughout are some believable supernatural events which spring up from time to time and which add a sense of quirky atmosphere to the story, bringing a bit of a chill to the air. It's interesting to see Creek Cottage become a character in its own right, its idyllic location and complicated history makes for interesting reading.

The story carried me along and I became genuinely interested in how both Kitty and Loveday's lives would work out, both are strong and determined women, who want what's best for their families and I think the author captures these parallels very well.

The Secret of Creek Cottage is a well written debut novel which captured my attention from first page to last. I'm interested to see what this talented author comes up with next.
