"Quite Possibly The Strangest Romance Ever Told"

I'm not a great reader of novellas, preferring a lengthier story, but Homecoming is quite a refreshing change, being completely self-contained within its eighty or so pages.

Setting the love story between two confused elderly residents in a nursing home could have developed into a mawkishly soppy look at love in the twilight years, but it’s really about much more than that. It’s about two people each recognising something precious in the other and whilst it doesn’t dwell too much on maudlin sentimentality, the story does offer wry look at what happens when two people who shouldn’t fall in love, do precisely that.

I thought that the story was really sensitively handled and allowed both Rosie and Tom, the two central characters, to express their feelings in a tender and rather unusual way. To say more about them would be to spoil the effect and I don’t want to do that as the story is best left to unfurl gradually, without any spoilers from me.

The bafflement and misunderstandings expressed by both Rosie and Tom really is very perceptive and shows that regardless of age, love in its gentlest form can be seen in small gestures, and that innocent remarks, however expressed, should be cherished and valued, regardless of age or infirmity.

Best Read with...A few custard creams and a delicate china teacup of Lapsang Souchong...
